Computer shuts down by itself
Off without warning, in the middle of what you were doing. There is usually a clear cause.
What you notice
- It cuts out and then starts again normally.
- It mostly happens under heavy load.
- It happens more the longer it has been on.
- It goes off and then refuses to start for a while.
- It began after a move or after cleaning.
What we do about it
Cutting out more as it stays on longer is nearly always heat. The machine is protecting itself. That is fixable.
If it happens under heavy load, the power supply may no longer be delivering. That is a different part and a different repair, so we establish which of the two it is first.
If it started after moving or cleaning, something is often simply loose. That is the cheapest outcome and the first thing we look at.
Do not keep working on it if it holds important files. Unexpected shutdowns can damage them.
